New macro lens: Sigma AF 180mm f/3.5 EX HSM APO macro

Last week I bought a used Sigma AF 180mm f/3.5 EX HSM APO macro (Photozone Review). It is my first real macro lens and it has a maximum magnification of 1:1. GorillaPod SLR-Zoom vs. GorillaPod Focus

When I bought my DSLR a few months ago, I also bought a small, flexible tripod to put it in my photo bag as a backup when I have my good tripod not in range. After some research on the web I decided to buy a GorillaPod SLR-Zoom with a GorillaPod Ballhead which is capable of holding up to 3 kg according to Joby. But on the first tests I noticed that my Canon EOS 7D with a mounted EF 70-200 f/4 L IS USM lens is too heavy for this combination to work properly. continue reading »

Read out Canon EOS 7D shutter count on OS X

If you own a Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera you might want to read out the shutter count. For my Canon EOS 7D this can be done very easily using gPhoto2. gPhoto2 is a free open-source tool which supports more than 1300 cameras. As it is written for Unix-like systems it can be compiled for OS X very easily. If you have Homebrew installed, you can install it easily via the terminal by running

brew install gphoto2

Homebrew will install some libraries and gphoto2. Now we can switch on the camera and connect it by USB. continue reading »

Kabelauslöser: Wer billig kauft, kauft zweimal

Wer Langzeitbelichtungsphotos machen möchte, braucht neben Photo auch noch ein Stativ und am besten einen Kabelauslöser. Da der Original Canon Kabelauslöser für meine EOS 7D bei Amazon immerhin 45 € kostet, dachte ich mir, dass ich hier ruhig auch zu Billigalternativen aus China greifen kann – Es ist ja eh nur ein Kabel mit einem Taster am anderen Ende. Gesagt getan, für 3 € inkl. Versand aus Hongkong erstand ich bei eBay ein Nachahmer-Produkt. Nach nur 3 Wochen Lieferzeit landete es dann in meinem Briefkasten. continue reading »

Spiegelteleskop an der Canon EOS 7D

Vor zwei Wochen habe ich bei uns auf dem Schrank ein altes Spiegelteleskop von Revue entdeckt. Es ist ein katadioptrisches Teleskop mit parallaktischer Montierung bei einem Spiegeldurchmesser von 114 mm und einer Brennweite von 1000 mm. In der Anleitung wird erwähnt das man es mit Hilfe eines T2-Adapters an eine Spiegelreflexkamera montieren kann. Das klang nach einer Herausforderung und so habe ich bei enjoyyourcamera für 15 € einen T2-Adapter für das Canon EF-Bajonett erstanden. Vor einer Woche kam er an und ich habe gleich getestet ob alles funktioniert. Bei sehr diesigem Wetter habe ich von unserem Loggia aus die Burg Hohenzollern und die Kirchturmsuhr photographiert – nicht 100% perfekt, aber es scheint zu funktionieren. continue reading »
